Fr. Z. has a fun little post on the mysteriously-encoded(or just plain incomprehensible)
Voynich manuscript (once owned, incidentally, by our pal Kircher). Possible culprits for its existence include: Cathars, Roger Bacon, assorted crazies and a forger with a weird sense of humor. (And probably Freemasons and little green men, too, but then, they're always th blame for this sort of thing. They must have lots of spare time.)
Finally, my quirky theories about this MS will finally see the light of day. Gratias, noster Matthæe!
ReplyDeleteTHE MOST MYSTERIOUS MANUSCRIPT ed. Robert Brumbaugh discusses some aspects of the problem. I suspect it's a joke devised by a scholar with way too much time on his hands.
