What Do Napoleon, Elizabeth I, King Victor Emmanuel II and the Passenger Pigeon Have in Common?


Perhaps something was lost in translation, like the way our separated brethren get the heebie-jeebies about our (misleadingly-named) tradition of "baptizing" bells. But Wikipedia reports of that ill-fated pest the passenger pigeon, "They became such a threat to farmers that in 1703 the Roman Catholic bishop of Quebec actually formally excommunicated the species." Given the ontological impossibility of excommunicating fowl, I wonder if perhaps it was just a really souped-up deprecatory blessing. So that's why they went extinct
