Good Pope John, Pars II

"John XXIII, on the contrary, likes to slip out at the slightest provocation to visit a hospital or a jail, to inaugurate a college or a convent, to call on an old friend who has been taken ill. And once he is on the road, to the despair of the Italian police on motorcycles who escort him, he likes to deviate from the appointed route to take a look at an old church or at a vew, or, very often, just for the fun of it. His frequent and unexpected excursions outside the Vatican have led Anglo-American correspondents in Rme to nickname him "Johnny Walker."

--Corrado Pallenberg, Inside the Vatican, 1960
