Interesting commentary from the Old Oligarch about artistic expression of the Virgin, the Church and Magisterial infallibility (a.k.a., "why is Mary wearing a stole"?). It also explains that curious allegorical stole-wearing image I saw representing Adoration at the Sacrament Altar at Santi Ambrogio e Carlo back in Rome, as well as the interesting stained-glass image of the virtue of Faith back at Notre Dame wearing full Papal regalia--I have a pet theory that the misinterpretation of some sort of image like that might have accidentally gotten the Pope Joan myth rolling, but some more on that later.
