This little aside posted by Mark Shea reminds me why the word "spirituality" (when contrasted with "religion") puts me on my guard. There are a lot of things called spirits out there that aren't on the side of the angels. Or at least the good, unfallen sort of angels. Best to not go down that dark alley.

  2. "So far off it's not even wrong" is a formulation I'm borrowing for the next time I have papers to grade.

I loved that quote just because it encapsulates so much wrongness. I want to copy it out on a card and show it to people as a litmus test. -- "Please explicate this statement," and if they dissolve in helpless rage then we're good.

  3. René Girard's category of "deviated transcedence" or "primitive sacred" seems to be what she likes dabbling in. It has a special allure to fallen human nature, a sense of danger, and, I suspect for millions it is what will replace the Christian ethos; namely, the neo-pagan.

  4. 12 Step groups sometimes mention their programs are spiritual and I think this is okay as they do alot of good. There are good spiritual groups out there also. Mike M. www.murraycavanaugh.com
