Random Thought
If the medievals had invented the PopeMobile, I suspect it would have looked like one of those wacky, colorful Indian busses. I think this would be a good thing, on the whole.
Well, of course, everything's better with the sedia. I don't know when they started using it but I think it was Renaissance. Anyone know? I'm just imagining an automobile designed by the people who gave us Mystery Plays and Sainte-Chapelle.
Well, it would probably be more like a pageant wagon. I mean, they did have people sitting on those sorts of things in processions sometimes.
PS -- Did you know they've got a church restoration makeover show? It's called "Divine Restoration", and it seems to be focused on renovating the infrastructure in old urban African-American churches. Apparently it's been running ever since Easter on a channel called TVOne, but I just came across it this morning through insomnia.
I know perfectly well that there are illuminated pictures of medieval/Renaissance parades with floats with people riding in them (decorated wagons, anyway), but all I've been able to find online was a wagon full of kiddies and noisemakers.
I'm reminded of a scene in the very POD but very weird book by Robert Hugh Benson, "The Dawn of All" (plot: 19th century throne-and-altar types take over the world, everyone lives happy ever after and wears really cool medieval hats; though sadly I doubt it would run quite so smoothly), which discusses steam-trains with images of patron saints on them.
Umm... perhaps a picture or a link?
ReplyDeletewhat was the sede gestatoria anyways? Not medieval?

ReplyDeleteI think they ran this thought experiment in the Philippines and came up with the Jeepny:
ReplyDelete(First example I could find, the ones I actually saw in the Philippines are more awesome and POD:
Christus Rex )

Ouch. They did an episode about St. Sabina's. They put together a new kitchen for their charity ministries.
ReplyDeleteEaster 2005. Ack, now I really feel bad.
