To the lost soul who came here looking for the answer to the Google search question should catholic girls do karate what does the saint say, I really am not entirely sure how to answer. One must logically assume that the Vatican's elite cadre of nunjas must recruit their loyal followers from the ranks of pigtailed convent schoolgirls, though the photographic evidence seems to suggest that consecrated virgins actually prefer the simple persuasiveness of shotguns in terms of advancing the front lines of the Church Militant. And perhaps some sort of kendo with comically oversized rulers.
That being said, if anyone has photographic evidence of a churchlady tearing a phonebook in half...
Off topic useless pedantry: It is accepted among some scholars that Conan Doyle was referring to "Bartitsu", one of the first Mixed Martial Arts. Perhaps he misspelled it, or perhaps he was unwilling to put the unfortunate middle syllable into print. Students of Bartitsu learned, among other things, how to defend oneself armed with an umbrella and bowler hat.
ReplyDeleteI believe I saw a news story a few years back that there were some India- Indian sisters or nuns learning karate, or similar Japanese martial art, in order to discourage unruly young persons from attacking them on the street, as had been occurring. (Wouldn't want to be an occasion of sin, you know.)
ReplyDeleteIt sounded like the other reason was so that they could get other girls and women, Catholic or non-, to take self-defense classes with them. The Indian street can be a hard place to live, especially if you're descended from the wrong caste or don't have a family or protectors.
That is pretty freaking awesome. (Kind of depressing it'd be necessary, but still pretty awesome.)
ReplyDeleteIs it these sisters?
