They met at the University of Notre Dame. Now these "Catholic Nerds" share their thoughts on Catholic culture, spiritual life and other musings (or "moosings" as the case may be) with the rest of the world. Click here to return to Main Page.
Harry Clarke is widely considered the greatest of Ireland's early twentieth stained-glass designers. He had his idiosyncrasies, but he was a marvelous and sensitive artist.
Mark--look at some of his other work. He has a pretty broad range, even if perhaps some of his figures may seem a bit over-elegant at first glance. And while I dislike sugary, overly-pious work, that doesn't mean everything has to be he-man macho, either. (Though it is more successful in his instances of female subjects like virgin-martyrs and Our Lady, where they have a graceful attenuated character.) It is a matter of balance.
Laura--glad you enjoyed it. Nicola Gordon Bowe's book _Harry Clarke_ is a good introduction to his work though the best photos overall (in color) of his stuff can be found online at flickr.com if you just type in his name. He was a man of considerable talents and imagination.
Is this supposed to be good?

ReplyDeleteThey remind me of ikons painted by laywomen: too feminine.

ReplyDeleteClothing and other details are good...otherwise they look about as languid as John Singer Sargent portraits.
