Missale Whate?

We recently found a copy of the missal used by the Armed Forces in World War II, the missale Castrense (more here, from Dale Price who found the same thing).

The Cartrense missal is, appartently, some abbreviated version of the Mass authorized for use in the wartime. Some questions for those who know:
(1) Was this an abbreviation done after Trent, or specifically for the war?
(2) Was it a resurrection of a much older rite?
(3) How, exactly, is it different than the Pian missal?

Thanks!
